South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Four-year-old Jordan Brown from Goose Creek, S.C. became the three millionth fan in the South Carolina Stingrays 14-year history, as he witnessed Gwinnett rookie Colton Fretter score four goals to power the Gladiators past the Stingrays 6-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Brown, who was in attendance for his second-ever Stingrays game, won a seven-day and six night trip to Kissimmee, Florida, courtesy of Celebration World Resort.
"Give credit where credit is due, Gwinnett is a solid team," South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "The sun will come up tomorrow. We have six days between games, so we'll use the down time as effectively as possible."
South Carolina (3-3-0, 6 points) opened the scoring at the 15:26 mark of the first period. Brendan Bernakevitch buried his first of the season at the low right circle beating rookie goaltender Dan Turple. Assists went to Peter Szabo and Jamie Fraser.
Gwinnett (4-1-0, 8 points) replied at 18:14, as Fretter pumped the puck past netminder Davis Parley for his third goal of the campaign. Helpers went to Brad Schell and Brian Lee.
Stingrays' Donny Grover gave South Carolina a 2-1 at 3:23 of the second. Grover's point shot found the back of the net for his first of the year. Josh Anderson and Matt W. Reid registered assists.
"It was nice to get the first goal out of the way," Grover said. "As a team, the puck didn't bounce our way, but we'll work hard this week in practice and look to get back into the win column."
The Gladiators got back on even terms on the penalty kill. Defenseman Jon Awe sent a shot from the right point through traffic and into the net for his fourth marker of the season at 12:14 of the middle stanza. Jeff Campbell and Schell picked up the assists.
It stayed tied until the third period, when Chad Painchaud recorded his first professional goal at 6:58 to give Gwinnett its first lead of the game at 3-2. Scott Mifsud and Joel Stepp garnered assists.
Fretter potted his second goal of the game at 11:06 with helpers going to Jim Jackson and Mifsud.
South Carolina closed the gap to one at the 16:55 mark. Jarrett Konkle netted his second of the campaign from Fraser and Chris Chaput.
With the Stingrays pressing for the equalizer, Fretter put the game away on a two-on-one break by scoring his hat trick goal with 1:57 remaining in regulation time.
Then with South Carolina pulling its goalie, Fretter deposited an empty-net goal from center ice for his fourth goal of game and making it 6-3. Schell and Campbell collected assists.
South Carolina failed to convert on six power plays, while Gwinnett also came up empty with the man advantage five times. Gladiators outshot the Stingrays 38-29.
The Stingrays take to the road for a 5:05 p.m. Sunday contest versus the Columbia Inferno at the Carolina Coliseum.
The next home game for South Carolina is at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at the North Charleston Coliseum. It's Firehouse Bar and Grill Night with $10 tickets in any section, $2 beers, and 2-for-1 hotdogs.
