Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - After letting a 2-0 lead with 21 minutes left slip away in regulation, Alaska found the range in the shootout, scoring three times in five attempts and securing a 3-2 victory over Bakersfield in front of 5,136 Saturday at Sullivan Arena.
For the first time in four games, the Aces scored first, as Peter Metcalf delivered a perfect saucer pass to a wide-open Matt Shasby barreling down the slot. Shasby beat Condors goalie Jamie Hodson blocker side at 3:55 of the first period for his second goal of the year. Metcalf also set up Alaska's second goal, launching a drive from the point on the power play that caromed off Kevin Croxton and through Hodson for a 2-0 lead with 4:06 left in the frame.
The score remained that way deep into the second period, when the Aces turned the puck over in their own zone and Kevin St. Jacques capitalized, taking a pass from Sean Venedam and slipping a shot between the pads of Alaska starter Chris Beckford-Tseu at 18:59. Trailing just 2-1 entering the third period, St. Jacques registered the equalizer with 11 minutes remaining, and for the second straight night, the Aces had seen a multi-goal lead evaporate.
Alaska, which blew a 5-2 late second period Friday in an eventual 7-5 loss, out-shot Bakersfield 33-23, including 15-8 over the final 20 minutes and overtime, but Hodson extended the contest into a shootout. Each team scored twice in the first four rounds, but Olivier Filion's goal in the fifth went unanswered, as the Aces pulled even with Idaho (a 7-3 loser in Victoria) in the loss column atop the West Division.
Alaska, now 3-1, and the 2-2-1 Condors head to California next weekend for the back end of this home-and-home series. Friday and Saturday's games at Rabobank Arena will start at 6:00 p.m. AST, with live coverage on KFQD 750 AM beginning at 5:45. Tickets for Alaska's next home series (November 16-19 vs. Las Vegas) are now available at the Aces office, www.alaskaaces.com, and all Fred Meyer locations in Anchorage. Fans also may call Ticketmaster at (907) 562-4800.
