Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, more than doubled Idaho 7-3 tonight to earn their first win of the season in front of 4,162 fans at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. The Steelheads suffered their first loss of the season as the Salmon Kings tallied four straight goals in the first period and never looked back.
Former Manitoba Bison (CIS) Warren McCutcheon opened the scoring at 7:19 into the first period and posted his first pro goal. Assistant Captain Ryan Wade fed McCutcheon in the slot for the one-timer of which Goaltender John Daigneau got a piece, but it slipped under the pad for the Salmon Kings 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later, Kiel McLeod scored his fourth goal in five games, capitalizing on a pass from Defenseman Gustav Engman in an unusual 3-on-3 situation.
The Salmon Kings power play took charge as Milan Gajic, in his first game in the series, fired a shot from the right slot and beat Daigneau to give Victoria the 3-0 lead. With 2:43 remaining in the first frame, winger Wes Goldie jumped on a blueline pass between the Idaho defensemen for a breakway and went top corner to earn the first Salmon Kings shorthanded goal of the season.
At 6:09 into the second period, McCutcheon added his second goal of the night to make it a 5-0 Victoria lead. Wade led Forward F.P. Guenette to force a 2-on-1 and McCutcheon put the soft pass into the top left corner.
It took Idaho 12:05 into the period before they lit the lamp.Victoria Netminder Bryan Bridges got beat on the breakaway as Forward Francis Wathier earned an Idaho shorthanded goal. Right winger Derek Nesbitt scored his third goal in two nights and closed the gap before the second intermission.
Heading into the third period, Victoria held the 5-2 lead. At 6:42 into the final stanza, Colin Peters added another goal for Idaho, perched on the left of the crease and finishing a pass from Nesbitt. The Steelheads began to press, but Victoria padded their two goal lead.
Guenette earned a power play goal, his second goal of the season, with 4:50 remaining in regulation and Wes Goldie rounded out the win for the Salmon Kings with his second score of the night. Final score: 7-3 Victoria.
Victoria climbs to 1-2-1 and Idaho is handed its first loss of the season, 4-1-0. Bridges earned his first win for the 2006-07 season, and Daigneau suffered the loss in his pro debut.
