Ice Dogs Agree to Terms with Loder, Newans

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach Ice Dogs Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach Kevin Kaminski announced today that the Ice Dogs have signed forward Jeff Loder and defenseman Chris Newans to one-year deals. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Loder, 26, split time last year between the Flint Generals and the Port Huron Border Cats of the United Hockey League (UHL), totaling 16 goals and 41 assists in 65 games. During the 1999-2000 season, the Corner Brook, Newfoundland native set career highs and was second on the team in points (69) and first in penalty minutes (107) in 69 games with Saginaw/Ohio Gears (UHL). Loder scored 51 points with 82 penalty minutes in 67 contests during the 1998-99 season with the East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) Wheeling Nailers. Loder has amassed 170 points in 184 games over three seasons in the UHL and 138 points in 188 games over three seasons in the ECHL.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Newans is a tough offensive defenseman with strong leadership skills. Newans, 32, was one of the West Coast Hockey League's top scoring defenseman for three seasons (1996-97, 1997-98, and 1999-00). During the 96-97 season, the Dauphin, Manitoba native led all WCHL defensemen with 26 goals and 57 assists while registering a +27 plus/minus rating in 60 games. The following season, Newans ranked fourth among WCHL defensemen with 64 points. He produced a league-leading 24 goals and a +35 plus/minus rating in 56 games.
