South Carolina Stingrays News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today that Buddy Wallace has been traded to the Baton Rouge Kingfish. Wallace, who missed the majority of last season with a concussion, was a major player in the Rays Kelly Cup win in 2001.

The Baton Rouge Kingfish will compensate the Rays with future considerations for the fourth year forward.

Wallace began his pro career when he played a full season with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the AHL during the 1998-99 campaign. He scored 11 goals and added 11 assists in 70 games for the Monsters that season. After splitting his time, the next season, between Pee Dee of the ECHL and Grand Rapids and Manitoba of the IHL, Wallace signed with the Stingrays as a free agent prior to the 2000-01season. Before his professional career began, Buddy played hockey and studied mechanical engineering at Clarkson University.

"We are not 100% sure about Buddy's future in hockey and therefore could not commit a roster spot to him," explained Fitzsimmons. "Buddy is a terrific player, he can dominate in this league when he is healthy, we certainly hope that he can resume his career and have success with the Kingfish."

The Rays begin training camp this Sunday at the Carolina Ice Palace. The Stingrays preseason schedule begins Friday, October 4th with a road game in Florence against the Pride. The two teams will lock horns the following night at the North Charleston Coliseum at 7:30. The Stingrays play their final pre-season game on Monday the October 7th in Columbia against the Inferno at 7:05. After beginning the season on the road on October 11th against Pee Dee, South Carolina will have its home opener on October 19th against the Columbus Cottonmouths.
