Iowa Cubs News Release
PAPILLION, NE - The Iowa Cubs (64-46) took the series with a 9-4 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers (50-58), Friday at Werner Park.
Omaha broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Devin Mann. That is the only run Michael Rucker would allow, as the righty spun 3.0 innings allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five.
Anthony Kay followed Rucker and spun two perfect innings, striking out four of the six batters he faced. Iowa got on the board in the sixth, scoring three runs on singles from Edwin Ríos, Darius Hill and Luis Vazquez.
They followed a three-run sixth with a five-run seventh highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Matt Mervis and David Bote. The Storm Chasers fought back with a run of their own in the seventh on an RBI single from John Rave.
Down 8-2 in the eighth, Nate Eaton clubbed a solo home run to make it 8-3. Both teams scored in the ninth, but Cam Sanders retired the final two batters to earn Iowa their fourth consecutive win.
POSTGAME NOTES:
In his first start since July 28, Darius Hill went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in out of the seven-spot tonight. The outfielder also drew a walk, giving him three more walks (24) this year than he had all of last year with Iowa (21) in 19 less games.
With tonight's victory, Iowa moved to 31-0 this year when scoring nine or more runs.
Iowa and Omaha will continue their series tomorrow night, with first pitch scheduled for 5:35 pm CT at Werner Park. You can listen to all Iowa Cubs games on Hope AM940 and stream them for free on the Bally Live App. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
