Albuquerque Isotopes News Release

The Albuquerque Isotopes (6-7) were held to just six hits, all singles, as the Iowa Cubs (7-6), behind a pair of pitchers that included former 'Tope Les Walrond, blanked Albuquerque 8-0 Wednesday night at Principal Park.

Starter Walrond was dealing from the first inning on, allowing four hits in six excellent innings of work in which he struck out four and didn't walk a batter. At one point from the second frame to the fifth, the left-handed Walrond (2-0) retired 11 straight Isotopes in a row on his way to his second win of the season. Reliever John Webb picked up where Walrond left off, throwing three scoreless frames to earn his first save of the year.

Isotopes starting pitcher Paul Mildren, who was riding two consecutive solid outings, encountered trouble in the bottom of the third, when Angel Pagan doubled to left, scoring Albenis Machado and putting Iowa on the board 1-0. Carlos Rojas followed with a single to right to plate Pagan, and suddenly the Cubs were up 2-0 early.

The Cubs added two more in the fifth on a two-run double by Mike Fontenot that scored Pagan and Rojas to extend the advantage to 4-0 and chase the young Isotopes lefty from the game. In five innings, Mildren (1-1) gave up four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out two en route to his first Triple-A defeat.

Nic Ungs took the ball from Mildren and threw two scoreless frames before newest Isotopes reliever Matt Yourkin, just up from Double-A Carolina this afternoon, allowed Iowa a four-run bottom of the eighth that blew the game wide open and sent the I-Cubs to the 8-0 win.

Offensively, Chad Hermansen extended his hitting streak to a team-high-tying seven games with a single in the second inning and saved at least one run by making a leaping catch at the wall, robbing Micah Hoffpauir of extra bases in the bottom of the fifth.

The 'Topes will look to get back on the winning track in Thursday morning matinee behind right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez (0-1, 8.64), who will do battle with I-Cubs righty Carlos Marmol (0-0, 4.50). First pitch at Principal Park is slated for 11:05 A.M. with all of the action on 1050-AM KTBL.

Albuquerque returns home on Saturday, April 21 for a four game homestand that's packed with promotional heavyweights Myron Noodleman, Pennant Night, and 50-cent Hot Dog Night, as well as new favorites such as an Orbit Growth Chart for kids.
