Lewis Anchors 4-1 Win For River Cats
April 18, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Colby Lewis gave up three hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings and Jason Stokes hit his second home run of the year in Sacramento's 4-1 victory over the Portland Beavers at PGE Park Wednesday night.
Stokes, who had a grand slam against the Beavers on April 10, hit a solo home run in the eighth inning and was 2-for-2 with two walks for the River Cats (9-5), who evened the series at a game apiece.
Ron Flores worked an inning of scoreless relief, but the Beavers (6-8) avoided their second shutout of the season with a run in the ninth off reliever Shawn Kohn.
After allowing hits to two of the first four batters he faced, Lewis (1-1) faced just two over the minimum the rest of the way on his way to his first win of the season.
The Beavers got two hits apiece from Craig Stansberry and Jack Cust, who drove in Portland's lone run with a two-out RBI single.
Portland starter Cesar Carrillo turned in his best Triple-A start, limiting the River Cats to a run and just one hit in his third start of the year. Carrillo, who missed the entire second half of the 2006 campaign with a strained pitching arm, walked five and was taken out after five innings due to a predetermined pitch count.
Daric Barton scored on a throwing error by shortstop Luis Cruz in the fourth; in the sixth, Brian Stavisky's RBI single scored Hiram Bocachica, who drove in J.J. Furmaniak with an RBI double in the seventh.
Stokes' homer made it 4-0 in the eighth.
The Beavers play host to the River Cats in the third game of the four-game set Thursday night at 7:05 p.m.
NOTES: Before the game, the Padres purchased the contract of pitcher Aaron Rakers and optioned infielder/outfielder Paul McAnulty to Portland. McAnulty, who has played parts of two seasons with the Beavers, is expected to join the team Thursday ... outfielder Josh Howard pitched the ninth for Portland, his first career appearance on the mound. The last Beavers position player to pitch was David Matranga, who worked a scoreless inning of relief at Tacoma on June 24, 2006 ... for the third day in a row, the start of the game was delayed, this time by 12 minutes to allow for field preparation after a series of pre-game showers ... the Beavers, winners of two straight going into the game, haven't won three games in a row since Aug. 2-4, 2006.
