Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Jack Cust hit a three-run homer and Vince Sinisi clubbed his second of the year as the Portland Beavers hung on for a 6-5 victory over the Sacramento River Cats Tuesday night at PGE Park.
Oscar Robles had two hits, two runs scored and a walk for the Beavers, who have won four of their last five.
Reliever Andrew Brown worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win, his first with Portland (6-7). Leo Rosales has yet to be scored upon in his Triple-A debut season and survived a scare in the ninth to notch his third save.
Charles Thomas had three hits, a walk, a run scored and an RBI, while Daric Barton drove in two runs to lead the River Cats (8-5).
Portland's one-run lead appeared in jeopardy in the top of the ninth. Jeremy Brown doubled off Rosales, and, with two outs, Thomas laced a single into center, but center fielder Adam Shabala's throw to the plate arrived just in time to catcher Luke Carlin to get Brown for the final out.
Shane Komine (1-2) gave up five runs and six hits in his five innings for the loss.
After Craig Stansberry and Royce Huffman singled in the bottom of the first, Cust hit his fourth home run of the year to give Portland a 3-1 lead. The Beavers added to that in the second when Robles singled and scored on an RBI double by Luis Cruz.
Sinisi's solo homer to right-center in the third made it 5-1.
Kevin Melillo tripled to start the first and scored on an errant pickoff throw to first by Jared Wells, who yielded four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Trailing by four, the River Cats trimmed Portland's lead to a run in the top of the fourth on a sac fly from former Beaver J.J. Furmaniak and a two-run single from Barton.
The Beavers went back to work in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. Stansberry pushed across a run with a sac fly to center, but that would be the extent, as David Shafer coaxed an inning-ending double play to avoid further damage.
Thomas brought the River Cats to within a run in the sixth with an RBI single.
The two clubs meet against Wednesday night at PGE Park. First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
NOTES: The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes due to weather ... Sacramento's Hiram Bocachica was ejected by homeplate umpire Mike Muchlinski for arguing after striking out in the top of the eighth inning.
