Portland Beavers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - Clay Hensley scattered two runs and four hits over seven innings for his second win and the Portland Beavers won their first game at Cheney Stadium this season by defeating the Tacoma Rainiers 8-4 Friday night.

Adam Hyzdu, Bobby Scales and Wilson Valdez each had solo home runs for the Beavers, who were 0-5 at Tacoma coming into the game.

The Beavers (46-46) had 12 hits, their first double-digit hit total since July 2.

Hensley (2-2), who represented the Beavers in Wednesday's Triple-A All-Star Game, hadn't won since May 30, despite ranking among the league leaders in pitching over much of the last two months. The right-hander struck out four and issued three walks.

The Beavers carried an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth but were forced to bring in stopper Brad Baker to work out of trouble and pick up his 27th save after reliever Jack Cassel gave up a two-run single to Ryan Christianson in the final frame.

Tacoma's Cha Seung Baek (7-4) failed to make it out of the third inning and fell in defeat after giving up five runs and six hits over 2.2 innings.

With the Beavers trailing by a run early, Greg Sain and Valdez, a former Rainier, each had RBI singles in the second inning, and the Beavers increased their lead with three runs in the third. J.J. Furmaniak plated a pair of runs with a two-out single in the inning and scored when Scales, who was 3-for-4 on the night, singled to right field.

In the fifth, Hyzdu added a solo home run off former Portland Mike Bumstead that made it 6-1 in favor of the Beavers.

Tacoma got a run in the bottom of the first as Jamal Strong doubled to lead off the inning, later scoring on a groundout by Greg Dobbs.

The Rainiers (50-41) scored again in the bottom of the fifth when Ramon Santiago's two-out double scored Aaron Rifkin to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Scales and Valdez hit solo home runs off Cesar Jimenez in the eighth. It was Scales' 11th blast of the season and Valdez' first with the Beavers.

NOTES: Mark Loretta, the second baseman of the San Diego Padres, was 0-for-4 with a strikeout in his first game of a major league rehab assignment with the Beavers. Loretta is making his way back from a strained thumb ligament.
