'Birds, Z's Split Doubleheader

Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis and New Orleans split the first ever day-night doubleheader at AutoZone Park with the Redbirds taking game one and the Zephyrs winning the nightcap.

In the first game, the ‘Birds slugged their way to victory with three home runs from three different players. RF John Rodriguez got things started with a two-run blast in the third and 1B Chris Duncan added a solo shot in the fourth. LF Raul Gonzalez hit a solo homer in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Starter Anthony Reyes (7-3) earned the win in the day game with six shutout innings. The right-hander fanned seven batters and allowed four hits with no walks. Donnie Bridges (2-5) was the loser, allowing three runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. LHP Tyler Johnson picked up his fourth save, after striking out three of the eight batters he faced in two innings of work.

In the nightcap, the Zephyrs scored a run in the top of the seventh to win a pitcher's duel 1-0. Tyrell Godwin scored on a Dee Brown sacrifice fly for the game's only run. The Z's scratched out only five hits, while Memphis had six. Six different Redbirds had hits but Memphis went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Redbirds starter Mark Nussbeck (3-4) took the loss, after allowing only one run on five hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked a pair of batters. Southpaw Matt White (4-3) earned the victory for New Orleans with seven shutout innings. Roy Corcoran got the save with two perfect innings of relief.

The ‘Birds and Z's will play again tomorrow night with game time set for 6:05 p.m. LHP Bill Pulsipher (3-4) will toe the rubber for Memphis against RHP Chad Durbin (0-4) of New Orleans.
