Hurricanes Assign Andrej Nestrasil to Charlotte
January 10, 2017 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Charlotte Checkers News Release
After he cleared waivers today at noon, the Hurricanes have assigned Andrej Nestrasil to Charlotte.
The Czech forward has appeared in 114 NHL games over the last three seasons with Carolina, putting up 46 points (17g, 29a) along the way. He also spent three games on a conditioning stint with the Checkers during the 2014-15 season, going scoreless and racking up 17 penalty minutes.
Nestrasil has five points in 18 games this season with Carolina, but has played just twice since Dec. 10 and has been a healthy scratch in 22 games. With Elias Lindholm returning from injured reserve, a move was necessary to free up a spot on the Hurricanes' roster.
The 25-year-old is coming off of a season cut short by a fractured vertebrae that forced him out of the final two months of the 2015-16 campaign.
Selected in the third round of the 2009 draft by Detroit, Nestrasil spent the first three years of his pro career split between the ECHL's Toledo Walleye and the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins. After bouncing between the two levels in his first two seasons (and capturing a Calder Cup in 2013), Nestrasil made the full-time jump to the AHL in 2013-14, putting up 36 points in 70 games and tying for third on the team with 16 goals.
The Czech forward began the next season in the NHL for the first time in his career, appearing in 13 games for the Red Wings before being placed on waivers, where the Hurricanes picked him up.
