Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
South Bend, Ind. - Once again, solid pitching and great offense converged for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays). Ryne Stanek limited the South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks) to just one run as his offense gave him plenty of support in the 11-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Hot Rods have outscored the first-place Silver Hawks 21-2 so far in their three-game series.
Johnny Field continued to seal his candidacy for Midwest League Player of the Week with another strong afternoon. He put the Hot Rods on the board in the top of the third inning with a double that plated Juniel Querecuto. The double gave Field 12 runs batted in for the week, and his two hits collected pushed his weekly total to 11.
The Silver Hawks tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third, but the offense was back at it for Bowling Green in the fifth. Kean Wong started the rally with a one-out single, and he moved to second on a Field base hit. After Armando Araiza reached on a fielder's choice, Ty Young walked to load the bases. That setup Pat Blair, who doubled to the left-center field gap to drive home Wong and Araiza. Darryl George capped the inning with a two-run single, and the Hot Rods led 5-1 after five innings.
Bowling Green broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Alexander Simon, Querecuto, and Wong all reached to load the bases to start the frame. One out later, Araiza reached on an infield single to drive home Simon and keep the bases loaded. Young delivered the big hit of the day, as he tripled into the right-center field gap to clear the bases. Blair with a single that drove home Young, Blair's third run batted in of the day.
The one thing the Hot Rods offense had lacked in the series was a home run, but that was fixed in the eighth inning. Araiza led off with a towering home run that sailed over the left-field bleachers, and it pushed the lead to 11-1.
Stanek (2-2) was dominant for the second consecutive start. He worked six innings and allowed just one run on six hits. He struck out a season-high tying six batters, and issued just one free pass. Brad Schreiber and William Gabay followed with scoreless frames out of the bullpen.
Josh Slaats (0-1) took the loss in his debut. He gave up three runs on three hits before leaving in the fifth.
The Hot Rods will look for the sweep of South Bend on Monday morning, first pitch is scheduled for 9:35 a.m. CT. The Pepsi Pre-Game Show will begin at 9:20 a.m. on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket. Bowling Green has pulled to within two games of a .500 record, and they're right in the middle of the playoff chase. The Hot Rods return home Wednesday to open up a six-game homestand at Bowling Green Ballpark.
