Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- Blake McKnight allowed only one earned run in six quality innings but the Peoria Chiefs offense was silenced by the Kane Cougars in a 2-0 loss on Sunday night. The Chiefs record is 30-26 and they remain in second place with a half-game wild card lead.
Kane County scored an unearned run in the third against McKnight, taking advantage of three Peoria errors. The only hit in the frame belonged to Trey Martin, who led off with an infield single. He took second when Chiefs third baseman Michael Schulze skipped his throw past first baseman Mason Katz. Martin scored on the first of two straight infield fielding errors that followed.
The Cougars got another run in the fifth. With one out Ben Carhart sliced a line drive to right field that went off the glove of the sliding Vaughn Bryan and rolled to the wall for a triple. Former Chief Yasiel Balaguert followed with a sacrifice fly to left for a 2-0 Kane County lead.
The Chiefs got a runner to third base in both the third and fourth inning. Richy Pedroza led off with a single in the third and advanced on a pair of groundouts. In the fourth, Carson Kelly opened with a single and was erased on a force out by Kenny Peoples-Walls. Peoples-Walls stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Katz struck out to end the inning.
The Chiefs did not send five batters to the plate in any inning until the seventh and did it again in the eighth. In the seventh, Mason Katz walked with one out and Richy Pedroza singled with two away. CJ McElroy Jr. grounded out to end the inning. The eighth inning began with the first two batters being retired before Kelly walked and Peoples-Walls reached on an error. Bryan grounded out to end the inning.
McKnight tossed six innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Jhonny Polanco went two scoreless innings with a walk and a strikeout. Zach Loraine pitched the ninth with a hit and a strikeout.
