Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Midland, Mich. - Oscar Hernandez lined a two-run home run early on, and it was all the pitching staff needed as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) defeated the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers) on Wednesday night, 2-1. Starter German Marquez went five scoreless as the Hot Rods won their fourth game in a row.
Early on, both Marquez and Great Lakes starter Victor Arano were in dominant form. After three innings of play, Arano had amassed six strikeouts on just 35 pitches, and Marquez needed just 39 tosses to face just two batters above the minimum. Things went bad for Arano however in the fourth.
The top of the fourth started with an infield single by Kean Wong, his second in as many at-bats. Hernandez then stepped to the plate, and powered his eighth home run of the season over the left-field wall. It landed just to the right of the left-field foul pole as well, and it gave Bowling Green a 2-0 advantage. Shortly after, Arano would leave the game due to an apparent injury.
Marquez (4-5) was happy to take the lead and dominate the rest of his start, as he collected a total of five strikeouts before leaving. The right-hander allowed just two hits, and has now posted an earned run average of just 1.95 in his last six outings. Brad Schreiber relieved Marquez to start the sixth, and he worked two and two-thirds innings. He allowed just one unearned run, and struck out four batters.
The lone run crossed for Great Lakes when Joey Curletta grounded out to drive home Paul Hoenecke, who had moved up to third on an error and a passed ball. That was it for the offense, as Brian Miller got out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his third save with the Hot Rods.
Arano (4-7) allowed both runs on three hits before leaving in the fourth inning. He took the loss despite seven strikeouts.
The Hot Rods moved to within a game and a half of the final Midwest League playoff spot with the win, and they'll go for the sweep of the Loons on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT, and the Pepsi Pre-Game Show begins at 5:50 p.m. CT on the radio home of the Hot Rods, 1340 WBGN - The Ticket. Bowling Green returns home Monday, August 18.
