Peoria Chiefs News Release
BURLINGTON, IA- The Peoria Chiefs collected 10 runs on the strength of two Justin Ringo home runs to build a big lead and beat the Burlington Bees 10-7 Wednesday night. The win moves the Chiefs to 64-56 overall 27-24 in the second half, two games out of a playoff spot with 19 games left.
Peoria wasted no time in getting to Harrison Cooney and the Bees. Cooney, who started the game with the third best ERA in the MWL, gave up a leadoff double to Vaughn Bryan and hit CJ McElroy Jr. Juan Herrera hit a comebacker and Cooney threw wild down the right-field line as both Bryan and McElroy scored for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. Ringo launched the next ball over the center field wall for a two-run homer and a 4-0 lead.
With the Chiefs on top 4-1, Ringo and Cooney keyed another big inning in the fifth. Bryan reached on a bunt single and McElroy sacrificed back to the mound. Cooney again threw the ball away, this time into centerfield, as Bryan moved to third and McElroy to second. With one out, Ringo launched a three-run homer of the 20-foot-high wall in right for his second homer of the game and a 7-1 Chiefs lead. Two batters later Rowan Wick beat out an infield single and scored on a Ronald Castillo double for an 8-1 lead.
Burlington got two back in the bottom of the inning when Bo Way hit a two-run homer off Chase Brookshire. The Chiefs scored in the sixth when Carson Kelly singled home McElroy with the bases loaded but Herrera was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning. Earlier in the frame Bryan had been thrown out at the plate on a grounder to shortstop give the Chiefs four outs at the plate in the series.
Castillo dropped a flyball in right field in the bottom of the sixth allowing two Bees to score as they cut the Chiefs lead to 9-5 against Brookshire. Two more scored against reliever Steve Sabatino in the seventh on a Cambric Moye bases-loaded double as the Chiefs lead was down to 9-7. With two on and two out, Kevin Herget entered the game and struck out Erick Salcedo to end the inning.
The Chiefs scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth. Richy Perdoza singled and Bryan walked before both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by McElroy. Herrera's sacrifice fly to right scored Pedroza for a 10-7 lead. Burlington put two on in the bottom of the inning but a 4-6-3 double play erased the threat.
Brookshire (4-6) picked up the win allowing five runs, three earned, on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out four. Sabatino allowed two runs on four hits over one innings of work with a strikeout. Herget picked up his sixth hold with one hit allowed over 1 1/3 shutout innings as he walked one and struck out one. Kyle Barraclough nailed down his sixth save with a perfect ninth inning and a strikeout.
