Dayton Dragons News Release
Eastlake, Ohio-Amir Garrett fired a three-hit shutout and struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 6-0 to earn a split of a doubleheader on Wednesday night. Lake County won the first game 9-8.
Garrett (7-6) walked only one batter in becoming the first Midwest League pitcher in 2014 to toss two complete game shutouts. He shutout Bowling Green on June 11 at Fifth Third Field. Garrett's strikeout total was two short of the club record of 14 and the most for a Dragons pitcher since Drew Cisco notched 12 strikeouts on April 18, 2013. Garrett struck out all three batters he faced in both the third and sixth innings. He struck out six straight batters starting with the final out in the second inning. He retired the last 10 batters he faced.
The Dragons scored five runs in the second inning to build a big lead, keyed by a three-run home run by Robert Ramirez, his third homer of the year. Ramirez drove in four runs in the game.
Alex Blandino, Jonathan Reynoso, and new Dragons catcher Chad Tromp each had two hits. Blandino extended his hitting streak to eight straight games. Ronald Bueno also had a hit to extend his streak to seven straight.
In the first game, the Dragons battled back from an 8-2 deficit at the end of six innings to tie the game at 8-8 in the eighth. But Lake County scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a throwing error by Dragons pitcher Radhames Quezada on a bunt play. Quezada had walked the first two batters in the inning and fielded a sacrifice by the third batter, but his throw to first eluded Avain Rachal, allowing the winning run to score.
The Dragons rallied with two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to tie the game after trailing by six runs. Alex Blandino's two-run single in the seventh and a two-run double by Nick Benedetto in the eighth were the key hits.
The Dragons (25-26) battle the Captains (25-25) in the last game of the three-game series on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Sal Romano (7-10, 4.19) will start for the Dragons against Lake County's Anderson Polanco (2-0, 2.40).
The Dragons next home game is Friday, August 15 when they host Bowling Green at Fifth Third Field.
All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
