Hops Win in 14
August 16, 2015 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Hillsboro Hops News Release
SHORT HOPS: Longest game of the 2015 season (5:19) almost a year to the day since the Hops beat Eugene 9-7 in 17 innings at P.K. Park (8/17/14, 5:28). The Hops beat Vancouver 5-4 in a 19 inning game at Ron Tonkin Field on 7/7/13, which also lasted 5:28.
Hillsboro used nine pitchers in last night's game, one more than the eight they used in the Eugene marathon in 2014.
Galli Cribbs, Jr. was credited with the win, after pitching a scoreless 14th inning. Cribbs allowed a leadoff double and struck out a batter. He became the first Hops position player to pitch in a game, after entering as a defensive replacement for Josh Anderson in the seventh inning.
Cribbs' strikeout of Gunnar Heidt was the 22nd strikeout of the game for the Hops, a club record. The NWL record is 24, set by Tri-City in a 14-inning game against Everett in 2010. Starting pitcher Cody Reed fanned seven batters and walked two in his five innings. Reliever Brody Greer struck out six batters in 2 1/3 innings.
The Hops led 8-0 after four innings, but Vancouver scored nine unanswered runs to take the lead. It was the largest lead blown by the Hops in their history. The tying run scored on a balk by Greer in the seventh inning before he had thrown a pitch. Greer hit leadoff batter Andrew Guillotte in the eighth and committed another balk. A passed ball and fielder's choice brought home the go-ahead run.
Vancouver began it's comeback with six runs off Hops reliever Kirby Bellow in the sixth inning. Bellow had not allowed an earned run in 11 appearances as a professional (eight at Scottsdale in the Arizona League and three at Hillsboro) before surrendering five hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning Saturday night.
Dansby Swanson, the number one overall pick in the 2015 draft, got his first professional hit with an RBI triple in the second inning. Swanson added an RBI double in the fourth inning to finish the night 2-6-2r-d-t-2rbi-2bb-3k
