GREENSBORO, N.C. - Chris Volstad returned to form on the mound and the Greensboro Grasshoppers beat the Asheville Tourists 4-2 Thursday night at First Horizon Park.
The win gave the Hoppers (20-19) three wins in the four-game series.
Volstad, Florida's first pick in the 2005 draft, had lost his previous two starts but pitched seven strong innings against Asheville, allowing six hits, to improve to 5-3.
The tall right-hander gave up a run in the first inning and another in the fifth, but was in command otherwise, striking out five, walking none and getting 10 groundouts.
Shortstop Agustin Septimo contributed an outstanding defensive play with a backhand stop, spin and strong throw to get Asheville's Travis Becktel in the seventh inning.
Catcher Brett Hayes drove in two of Greensboro's runs. In the fourth inning, with the bases loaded, he hit into a fielder's choice that scored one run, and a second scored when the relay throw to first was wild. That gave the Hoppers a 2-1 lead.
Asheville tied the score in the top of the fifth, but Greensboro took the lead again when Kris Harvey's single drove in Jeff Van Houten.
Hayes provided an insurance run with his first homer of the year, a drive down the left field line.
"My swing is starting to come around now," said Hayes, who was out eight weeks with a broken hand. "I was able to put a good swing on the ball tonight."
Todd Doolittle pitched the eighth inning for the Hoppers, getting out of a jam by striking out Cole Garner to strand runners at second and third.
Blake Jones retired the side in order in the ninth to post his eighth save.
The home stand continues with four games against Kannapolis, starting tonight at 7 o'clock at First Horizon.
