Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC -- Brian Peacock and Michael Daniel each clubbed home runs and three Savannah pitchers scattered six hits as the Sand Gants avoided a series sweep by downing the Charleston RiverDogs, 7-1, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 4,279 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Peacock drilled a 3-run home run off Edgar Soto that barely passed the left field foul pole to highlight the Sand Gnats' five-run seventh inning. All five runs scored with two outs and came courtesy of five straight hits.
In the seventh, Daniel, who had connected for a solo homer in the second inning to hand the Sand Gnats a 1-0 lead, had a RBI single as did Alex Nunez.
With the victory, Savannah snaps a three-game skid and improves to 15-25 while the RiverDogs slip to 23-17. Savannah ended a six-game losing streak against Charleston in winning at Riley Park for only the second time in eight tries this season.
The Sand Gnats increased their early lead to 2-0 in the sixth when Carlos Torres knocked a double down the right field line with two outs that scored Dee Brown, who was hit by a pitch, and moved to second as Daniel drew a walk.
Charleston cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth as Reegie Corona led off with a single and Austin Jackson followed with a base on balls. With runners on first and second, Eduardo Nunez, playing in his first game as a RiverDog having joined the club from Tampa, singled to right field to scored Corona.
As Corona touched home, Nunez rounded first base but was caught when Torres, Savannah's first baseman, threw behind Nunez and Carlos Martinez, the Sand Gnats' starting pitcher, tagged Nunez out on his way back to first.
Martinez (1-1), in pitching 5.1 innings, earned his first win of the season as he allowed only three hits and fanned five, at one point retiring 11 consecutive batters.
Chris Thompson relieved Martinez in the sixth and went 2.2 scoreless frames on two knocks and struck out a pair, while Bryan Lambert shut down Charleston in the ninth inning and struck out one.
Charleston starter Brian Villalona (3-1) pitched five innings and allowed one run on Daniel's solo home run, five hits and fanned three. Soto, the RiverDogs' second pitcher on the night, surrendered six runs -- all earned -- on six hits, walked three and struck out one in two innings of work.
Collecting two hits each for Savannah were Ofilio Castro, Peacock, Brown, Daniel and Torres.
The first-place Rome Braves come to Charleston with a 6.5-game lead over the second-place RiverDogs for a four-game showdown beginning Friday. RiverDogs manager Bill Mosiello will start right-hander Jim Conroy (1-1, 2.63 ERA) while the Braves send righty Jeff Lyman (2-0, 2.73 ERA) to the mound.
