Hagerstown Suns News Release

On Sunday, May 14th, the Hagerstown Suns hosted their 1st-ever "Pitching Pink" Day celebrating moms on Mother's Day and raising awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Awareness. The Suns raised a total just over $2,400 throughout the day's events that will be donated to Breast Cancer Awareness - Cumberland Valley (BCA-CV).

To commemorate the day, the first 1,000 fans through the gates received a pink Hagerstown Suns cap, complete with an embroidered pink ribbon, and the Suns auctioned specially designed pink jerseys and game-used bases. The entire Suns team wore the pink jerseys during the Sun's 5-3 loss to the Lakewood BlueClaws on Sunday. The most expensive jersey (IB Nick Evans) sold for $280.

In addition to the auction, there were other fundraisers at Municipal Stadium on Sunday as well. The Suns donated $5 from each ticket purchased for the Mother's Day Luncheon in the Wolf Furniture Picnic Patio and the club also sold pink awareness ribbons that hung around the park throughout the months of April and May.

"Events like these remind me that we're so much more than just a baseball team," said Suns President & General Manager Kurt Landes. "It feels great that we were able to contribute to this cause financially, but just as importantly, everyone in the ballpark on Sunday knew more about Breast Cancer, how to detect it earlier, and how deeply it effects women and families."

Joan Fell, Executive Director for BCA-CV, commented, "It was an inspirational day in support of breast cancer awareness. Thank you to the Hagerstown Suns for helping raise awareness and funds to be used in our local community to provide free mammograms. The Suns support of breast cancer really hit a home run in the hearts of the survivors and their families!"

Anyone interested in participating in the BCA-CV Free Mammogram Program, can call the BCA-CV office at 301-791-5843. If you fit the BCA-CV guidelines, and have your mammogram done through the program, individuals will receive a $20 Wal-Mart gift card for free. "We feel getting a mammogram is that important. We're here to help those who can not wait for a cure," added Fell.

The Real Red Barron and Dan Ryan Builders were the major sponsors of the day's events, with support from Prettyman Broadcasting.

The Suns are the single-A affiliate of the New York Mets and are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties. For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact the Suns at 301.791.6266 or visit online at www.hagerstownsuns.com.
