Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Lincoln, NE - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (31-40) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 5-4 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Haymarket Park on Thursday evening.
With the Saltdogs within one headed into the bottom of the ninth, Goldeyes closer Victor Capellan pitched a shutdown 1-2-3 inning for a second straight night, preserving the win for the Fish. The save was his 17th of the season.
"The boys swung at the bat really well these past three days, and I thought we pitched it really well... For the most part there was a lot of zeros put up by our pitchers, so it was a good series. Hopefully we can go home and build on it," said hitting coach Tom Vaeth.
With men on first and second, the Fish opened scoring in the top of the third. After a leadoff walk from Gavin Stupienski and a throwing error by Christian Ibarra (allowing Matt McCann to reach first), Reggie Abercrombie hit a sacrifice fly to bring Stupienski home for a 1-0 lead.
The Goldeyes added to their lead in the fourth. Grant Heyman singled to left, advanced to third on a Dexter Kjerstad double, and was driven home by Jordan Ebert on a sac fly RBI.
In the fifth, McCann hit a leadoff single. The Goldeyes pulled ahead to a 4-0 lead two batters later, when Abercrombie hit a two-run no-doubter over the left field fence.
In the bottom frame, the "Dogs answered back with one run. Randolph Oduber singled and made it home on an RBI double from Dashenko Ricardo.
In the seventh, Lincoln pulled within one on a two-run home run from Christian Ibarra. Josh Mazzola answered back with a towering solo homer in the eighth to give the Goldeyes a much needed insurance run.
Even though T.J. Bennet's third homerun of the series brought the "Dogs within one in the eighth, the Fish were able to hold on to claim the series win.
Starting pitcher Mitchell Lambson (6-3) earned the win for the Goldeyes, allowing three runs on eight hits over six and two-third innings, while striking out seven. Saltdogs starting pitcher Austin Robichaux (2-6) took the tough-luck loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over six and two-third innings, while striking out five.
Tomorrow the Goldeyes are back at Shaw Park to begin a three-game series against the Chicago Dogs at 7:05 p.m. JC Sulbaran will take the mound for the Goldeyes. The Dogs have not yet announced their starting pitcher.Tickets for all Goldeyes' home games are on sale now by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca/Goldeyes, or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the box office at Shaw Park.
