RedHawks' Late Inning Comeback Falls Short to Saints 7-5

Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release

FARGO, ND - For a moment, it looked like there was a chance. With four Fargo-Moorhead runs already scored in the ninth inning and the game-tying run on first base, the St. Paul Saints had to use three pitchers in the bottom of the ninth to give the RedHawks a 7-5 loss in front of a sellout crowd of 4,181 fans Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field.

All nine RedHawks batters came up to the plate in the ninth inning, and the home team was within striking distance when St. Paul's Beck Wheeler slammed the door by striking out Yhoxian Medina for the final out and earning his first save of the season.

Derrick Fox started the inning with a double and came around to score on an error by Saints' first baseman Nathaniel Maggio after Tim Colwell reached on a single. A single by Brennan Metzger brought Colwell to third, and Devan Ahart's sacrifice fly scored Colwell to make it a 7-3 game with one out.

Then, singles by Chris Jacobs and Keury De La Cruz brought Metzger around to get the RedHawks within three. After Quinn Irey struck out, Maikol Gonzalez shot a single to center to bring Jacobs in and make it a two-run game. Medina's strikeout ended the rally and snapped a five-game winning streak for the RedHawks.

Trevor Foss was sensational on the mound for the Saints tonight, limiting the RedHawks to one run on four hits over the first eight innings, to earn his second win of the season. Chris Jacobs' solo home run to center field in the second inning was the only blemish on an otherwise sparkling outing for Foss.

Brandon Barker struggled in the middle innings, surrendering four runs before being pulled in the fifth inning. The righty finished with four runs on 10 hits and four strikeouts in 4.1 innings on the mound. Barker moves to 2-3 on the year with a 4.73 ERA.

The RedHawks remain one game behind Gary SouthShore in the North Division and one and a half games ahead of the Saints for the second spot. Fargo-Moorhead can clinch its fourth consecutive series win tomorrow afternoon in the series finale against St. Paul. First pitch for the Business Day Game is scheduled for 12:30 PM.
