Saints Lose in Grand Fashion 5-2 to the RedHawks

FARGO, ND - The St. Paul Saints had the opportunity to get back to where they started when their series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks began on Monday night. Unfortunately, they couldn't figure out Brennan Metzger, who collected all five RBI including a fifth inning grand slam, as they lost 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field. The loss drops the Saints to 38-32 and they are now 2.5 games behind the RedHawks for the second playoff spot.

With the Saints up 2-1 in the fifth Maikol Gonzalez led off with a single to center. The big play occurred when Derek Fox hit a sharp grounder to the left of shortstop Jake Smith. He was unable to come up with the grounder and the error put runners at first and second. Yhoxian Medina sacrificed the runners over and Tim Colwell walked to load the bases. Metzger unloaded the bases by hitting the first pitch over the left field wall, his eighth of the season, for a grand slam making it 5-2.

That was more than enough as the Saints offense couldn't get the key hits when they needed them. In the sixth, Zach Walters and Dante Bichette Jr. led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but starter Trey McNutt retired the next three hitters.

In the seventh Kyle Barrett reached on a one out single. After a pitching change, Burt Reynolds struck out and Brady Shoemaker reached on second baseman Maikol Gonzalez' error, but Walters grounded out to end the inning. The Saints left 10 men on base during the day.

With the Saints trailing 1-0 in the fourth they took their lone lead of the game when Bichette Jr. singled to right with one out. Nathaniel Maggio doubled him to third. Aaron Gretz tied the game with an RBI single to center and Smith followed with a sacrifice fly making it 2-1 Saints.

Max Murphy's 16-game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0-5.

The Saints return home for a three-game series against the Kansas City T-Bones beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Matt Solter (2-4, 4.41) to the mound and the T-Bones are TBA. It is Xcel Energy Friday Night Fireworks. We also induct Terry Wetzel into our Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame presented by Killebrew Root Beer. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities, and heard on Alt 93.3 FM.
