Metzger Bats in All Five Runs as Hawks Take Series from Saints
August 2, 2018 - American Association (AA)
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Brennan Metzger drove in all five runs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning, as the RedHawks beat the St. Paul Saints 5-2 in front of a sellout crowd of 4272 fans at Newman Outdoor Field Thursday afternoon to win the four-game series. The series win makes it seven wins out of the last eight series for Fargo-Moorhead.
Metzger singled home Tim Colwell in the third inning to open the scoring after Colwell hit a line drive that hugged the first base foul line all the way to the corner, allowing Colwell to leg out a triple.
Then, after the Saints took back the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, the Hawks loaded the bases for Metzger in the fifth with a hit, an error, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt.
The former San Francisco Giants pick drilled the first pitch he saw from Saints pitcher Jake Matthys into the Hornbacher's sign beyond the left field fence for his eighth home run of the season. Metzger finishes the series against St. Paul 6 for 17 with a double, a triple, a grand slam, and 6 RBIs.
Trey McNutt and his bullpen batterymates combined to close out the Saints over the next five innings and finish the game without allowing another run. McNutt finished with two runs against on nine hits over 6.1 innings. The right hander had three strikeouts in this afternoon's game to bring his season total to 79 whiffs, good for the team lead and fourth in the American Association.
Travis Ballew and Geoff Broussard bridged the middle innings spectacularly, allowing no hits in 1.2 combined innings. In the ninth, Randy McCurry slammed the door with two strikeouts to finish off the RedHawks win.
With the win the RedHawks move to 40-29 for the year, even in the win column with the Gary SouthShore RailCats. Fargo-Moorhead sits one half game behind Gary in the North Division with the RailCats off on Thursday.
Fargo-Moorhead continues its 10-game homestand tomorrow night at Newman Outdoor Field as it opens a three-game series against the Cleburne Railroaders. The RedHawks went 1-2 against the Railroaders in Cleburne in the first meeting back in May. First pitch is scheduled for 7:02 PM. Fans can come out and watch a fireworks show after the game thanks to Auto Owners Insurance.
