Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (30-40) beat the Lincoln Saltdogs 6-3 in 10 innings at Haymarket Park on Wednesday night.
Tied at 3-3 in the top of the 10th inning, Josh Mazzola legged out a two-out, infield single on a groundball along the first base line. Mazzola advanced to second when Tucker Nathans reached on an error by second baseman TJ Bennett. Grant Heyman followed with a line drive, three-run home run that just cleared the wall in right field. Heyman's go-ahead homer came against left-handed reliever Jose Jose. Jose entered the day having allowed just two hits in 24 at bats to left-handed batters this season.
Victor Capellan struck out two during a perfect bottom of the 10th to earn his 16th save of the year.
The Goldeyes trailed 3-2 as late as the seventh when Tyler Baker led off the top of the inning with a long home run to right-centre that evened the score.
The Saltdogs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Bennett hit a two-out, three-run home run to left.
Winnipeg answered back in the top of the second. Nathans led off with a ground rule double to right, advanced to third on a Josh McAdams single through the left side, and scored when Jordan Ebert reached on an infield single. Dexter Kjerstad singled to load the bases with no outs, and the Goldeyes pulled within 3-2 two batters later on a Matt McCann fielder's choice.
Alex Boshers started for the Goldeyes and provided a quality start, allowing three earned runs on six hits in six innings. Boshers walked two and tied a season-high with eight strikeouts. Boshers worked out of first and third, one-out jams in both the second and fourth innings.
Edwin Carl (3-3) earned the win in relief, pitched scoreless baseball over the eighth and ninth. Jack Charleston chipped in a scoreless bottom of the seventh in relief of Boshers.
Jose (3-2) took the loss for Lincoln (32-36), allowing three unearned runs in the top of the 10th.
Kyle Kinman started for the Saltdogs and also took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on 10 hits in five innings. Kinman walked none and struck out three.
The series concludes Thursday evening at 6:45 p.m. Mitchell Lambson (5-3, 3.88) takes on right-hander Austin Robichaux (2-5, 4.87). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
