Wichita Wingnuts News Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - The Chicago Dogs banged out 15 hits and held the Wichita Wingnuts to just one run over the final seven innings, earning a split of the four-game series with an 8-3 win on Thursday night at Impact Field.
Travis Banwart (5-3) suffered through his worst start of the season, tagged for a season-high 10 hits and seven runs in a season-low 4.1 innings. Chicago (28-42) again grabbed a first-inning lead, this time scratching across a run on a hit by pitch, single, and wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
The Wingnuts (43-27) stormed back in the second, getting back-to-back home runs on consecutive pitches from Angel Reyes and Chase Simpson to take a short-lived 2-1 lead. Kenny Wilson's two-out, three-run homer in the bottom of the inning put Chicago in front 4-2, a lead they would not relinquish.
Treysen Vavra lifted a sacrifice fly in the third that stretched the lead to 5-2, then solo home runs from Joe Benson and Dalton Blaster made it 7-2 Dogs in the fifth.
Wichita got a run back in the sixth on an RBI single from Abel Nieves, but Chicago answered with an RBI single of their own from Stephen Perez in the seventh that restored the five-cushion.
Kylin Turnbull (4-4) picked up the win for Chicago with six innings, allowing five hits and three runs. He walked one and struck out five. Brandon Shimo, Tommy Thorpe and Rich Mascheri closed out the win for the Dogs with one scoreless inning of relief apiece.
The Wingnuts travel to Gary to open a three-game series with the RailCats on Friday night. Left-hander Casey Harman (8-2, 3.01) gets the ball for Wichita, while Gary SouthShore has not yet announced their starter. First pitch from U.S. Steel Yard is scheduled for 7:10 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
