Saskatoon Blades News Release
SASKATOON, SK - On a night devoted to the dogs, the old saying "who let the dogs out - showed here at SaskTel Centre as the Blades snap a six game home losing streak against the Memorial Cup hosting Red Deer Rebels.
"Last night we played 57 minutes tonight we played 60 and we got the results we got," says Head Coach Bob Woods on his groups efforts tonight.
Like last night the Blades came ready to play right from the start. Cameron Hebig opened the scoring with some nice dangles in the offensive zone and releasees the shot only to be tipped by Ryan Graham for his 6th to put the Blades up 1-0.
Then just over a minute after the Blades made it 1-0, Colton Bobyk takes advantage of a good passing play by Red Deer to jump up in the play to tie the game at one.
In the second, Cameron Hebig on a 2 on 1 pulls off the pop and lock move and goes high glove past Martin to make it 2-1 at 8:26 in the second.
Red Deer would get a 2 on 1 of their own with Evan Poeli tapping it in in the feed from Wyatt Johnson to tie the game at two with just over 30 seconds after Hebig gave them the lead.
With 27 seconds left in the second period, Josh Uhrich makes a great play at centre to poke the puck away from the Red Deer defender and generated a 2 on 1 where Mason McCarty capitalized to make it 3-2 Blades.
just over 5 minutes left in the third the Blades put the game out of reach for the Rebels as Brycen Martin Point shot looks to be tipped on net by Draude for his first as a Blade to give them a two goal lead at 4-2.
In a desperation move to get some momentum the Rebels pull their goaile with 3:54 to play in the third. But all game long the Blades handled the Red Deer pressure as they were able to play a lot more in the attacking zone which was something that didn't happen a whole lot in last night's game. "They did a fantastic job tonight i'm really proud of them they're making my job a lot easier then it has to be by getting pucks out just like they did tonight," says Brock Hamm on the effort of his defence core throughout the game. Hamm who was named the games first star with 33 saves on the night.
"The will and want is the secret to our success that has got to be our identity and it's the only way we can have success we're not going to blow out teams or get into shootouts that can't be our style we're not there yet but we have to be a team that gets to those loose pucks, finishing checks and I thought everyone on our team contributed tonight it was a full team effort," praised Bob Woods on the effort his team gave at home.
The Blades will have a few days off before going back on the road to play the rival Prince Albert Raiders on Friday November 13th hoping to continue the "will and want" attitude and mentality long term.
