Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Swift Current, SK. - The Wheat Kings fell 4-1 to the Broncos in Swift Current Saturday night, giving Brandon back to back losses this weekend.
Landon Bow turned aside 35 shots, including eighteen in the final period, and rookie netminder Logan Thompson lost his first decision of the season as the Wheat Kings failed to gain ground on the front running Prince Albert Raiders in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division.
Jon Martin scored his league leading 19th goal of the season and set up two others as the Broncos beat Brandon for the second time in four games this season. While the Wheat Kings had won the last two against Swift Current, the Broncos did spoil Brandon's Home Opener in September with an overtime shootout win.
Jayce Hawryluk scored the lone goal for the Wheat Kings, who scored just two goals in the two weekend losses.
With the setback, Brandon remains two points back of Prince Albert and will be looking to get back on track Wednesday afternoon - Remembrance Day - when the 2016 Memorial Cup Host Red Deer Rebels pay a visit to Westman Place.
Wednesday's game is Koch Fertilizer Manitoba Minor Hockey Kick-off Day. As well, the Wheat Kings will be sporting their special military theme jerseys, in support of CFB Shilo. Proceeds from the auction sale of the jerseys will be donated to the Community Fun of the United Way Brandon and District.
Speaking of the military theme jerseys - Tanner Kaspcik's number 16 was auctioned off during Saturday's CKLQ broadcast with Bruce Luebke and longtime fan Adrian Swain of Brandon paid top dollar of $700 to get it.
Another jersey will be auctioned off Tuesday morning during the Morning Mess on 94.7 Star FM.
Meanwhile Wheat King prospects Ian Mitchell and Jarrod Gourley helped Team Canada-White beat Russia 6-2 Saturday night to win the Gold Medal at the World U17 Challenge.
