Hitmen lose to Rockets

Kelowna, BC - Justin Kirkland scored the lone goal of the shootout lifting the Kelowna Rockets to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Hitmen and into first place overall in the Western Hockey League standings on Saturday night at Prospera Place

The Rockets forced overtime when Tyson Baillie netted his 30th goal of the season with 50.4 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Hitmen would have the best chance in extra time to win it, awarded a 4-on-3 powerplay but were unable to beat the games number one star Michael Herringer. The Rockets goalie made 31 saves through 65 minutes and three more in the shootout.

Dillion Dube also scored for Kelowna who erased deficits of 1-0 and 2-1.

Jake Bean, with his league leading 19th goal of the season among defenceman and Keegan Kanzig, who skated in his 300th career WHL regular season game, found of the back of the net for Calgary.

Both teams went 0-4 on the powerplay in a contest thaw saw the Hitmen outshoot the Rockets 33-26.

Calgary, 31-19-1-2, will conclude their four-game BC road trip in with a Monday matinee in Kamloops on Feb. 8. The Hitmen then return to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday, Feb. 12 against the Red Deer Rebels. Game time is 7:00 p.m. for the Lunar Celebration which includes fortune cookies and post-game fireworks
