Hitmen Foundation Awards $50,000 Community Restoration Grant to Eugene Coste School Playground Redevelopment

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Foundation today announced the Eugene Coste School Playground Redevelopment project has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Community Restoration Program.
The Spanish bilingual school, located in the Calgary community of Haysboro, garnered over 29,000 votes in an online poll which concluded on Friday, March 2, at HitmenHockey.com. The poll, the third step in the award process, included other grant finalists Indus School Accessible Playground and Parkdale Community Outdoor Rink.
"Eugene Coste School would like to thank the Calgary Hitmen for choosing our school as one of the finalists and generously donating $50,000 to our new purple playground," said a release from Playground Committee Co-Chairs Sherri Nickle and Korinne Kazias. "We are very thankful to our school families, staff, students, community, and our entire purple army for coming together to help us win this grant and bringing us one step closer to making our student's wish of a purple playground come true. The colour theme is a memorial to a former student whose favourite colour was purple."
There is great demand for this redevelopment due to the age and condition of the existing playground. It does not meet current safety standards and will be removed in the spring of 2019 by the Calgary Board of Education because of the following problems:
Unleveled landscaping which causes flooding each spring
Rusty hand holds
Broken pieces
Splintered wood
Parts that can no longer be repaired due to discontinuation from the manufacturer
"We would like to congratulate Eugene Coste School and are honoured to be a part of this project that will see the redevelopment of a play space for the community of Haysboro," said executive director of the Calgary Hitmen Foundation, Candice Goudie. "This is the goal of the Hitmen Foundation Community Restoration Program to be a part of creating spaces that are safe and encourage kids to be active. We also want to thank and acknowledge Indus School and the Parkdale community for their thorough and creative proposals and videos."
The Calgary Hitmen Foundation has been giving back to education and wellness programs in the community and surrounding area for over 15 years. The heart of the Foundation is the scholarship program which funds the post-secondary education of Hitmen players and alumni. Support is also provided to grassroots sport organizations and health initiatives including Camp Kindle through Kids Cancer Care Foundation, the Rainbow Society, CBE Fuel for School and Distress Centre's ConnecTeen. To date, the Foundation has supported Calgary and area agencies with over $2.8 million.
