Winterhawks' Farkas Named WHL Goaltender of the Week
March 5, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release
Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Portland Winterhawks goaltender Shane Farkas has been named WHL Goaltender of the Week and league nominee for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 4, 2018.
Farkas posted three wins, a 1.33 goals-against-average, .961 save percentage and two shutouts this week to help the Winterhawks remain near the top of the U.S. Division and Western Conference standings.
Tuesday against the Tri-City Americans, Farkas stopped all 37 shots in a 9-0 win, earning second star of the game honours. Saturday, he once again silenced the Americans, stopping 30 shots in a 5-0 win, earning second star honours of the night across the WHL. Farkas closed out his impressive week with a 32-save performance in a 7-4 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds Sunday.
The win improved Farkas' winning streak to eight games, having not taken a loss since January 27 against the Kamloops Blazers. In those eight games, Farkas has compiled a 1.57 GAA and .947 SV% as well as the two aforementioned shutouts and perfect 8-0-0-0 record.
Originally selected by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the fourth round, 67th overall, of the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft, Farkas is in his second season with the Winterhawks. The 6-foot-2, 177-pound product of Penticton, B.C. has appeared in 32 career WHL regular season games, compiling a 17-11-0-0 record, 3.25 GAA, .901 SV% and three shutouts.
The Winterhawks will open a two-game set on the road against the Prince George Cougars on Tuesday, March 6 (7:00 p.m. PST).
