St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (June 10, 2013) - The St. Paul Saints had lost only one other 1-0 game at home in the franchise's history. It came 13 years ago to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. On Monday night the Saints had a sense of déjà vu losing once again to the RedHawks 1-0 at Midway Stadium in front of 3,338. It was the 13th time in franchise history the Saints had lost a game 1-0.

Both teams had an opportunity to score in the first. The RedHawks got a lead off infield single from Zach Penprase and he advanced to second when Mitch Einertson reached on an error by shortstop Adam Frost. Saints starter Anthony Claggett struck out Nic Jackson and Tim Alberts, but on strike three to Alberts Penprase and Einertson pulled off a double steal. Claggett got out of the jam when Keith Brachold grounded out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the first Adam Frost and Joey Becker each singled to start the inning, but Brad Boyer grounded into a double play. Craig Brazell and Willie Cabrera walked to load the bases, but Brandon Tripp flew out to end the inning as Taylor Stanton got out of his toughest jam of the night.

The lone run of the game crossed the plate in the third when Jackson doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Alberts.

Claggett would run into a mini jam in the fifth when he had runners at first and third and two outs, but struck out Alberts. The other jam came in the seventh. Todd Jennings led off with a single. On a hit and run Buddy Sosnoski singled off the second base bag, center fielder Jose Hernandez bobbled the ball as Jennings went to third, but Hernandez recovered in time to throw out Sosnoski going to second. Penprase followed with a walk, but Claggett picked him off and got Einertson to ground out to end the inning. Claggett went 7.0 innings allowing one run on nine hits while walking one and striking out six.

The Saints never mounted another major rally putting runners at the corners and two outs in the third, but Willie Cabrera popped out to end the inning and getting runners at first and second and two outs in the fifth, but Brazell grounded back to the mound. The Saints had just one base runner reach base from the sixth inning on. RedHawks starter Stanton went 7.0 shutout innings allowing eight hits while walking two and striking out three.

The last time the Saints lost a 1-0 game was June 24, 2009 at Grand Prairie and they are now 8-13 in 1-0 games

The same two teams meet in game two of the three game series on Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Luke Anderson (1-1, 5.00) against RedHawks RHP Alex Caldera (3-2, 2.73). The front page of the internet meets minor league baseball on Reddit night. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
