Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA- The Wichita Wingnuts (15-8) lost 7-6 to the Winnipeg Goldeyes (12-12) at Shaw Park on Monday night.
Winnipeg overcame Wichita leads of 5-1 and 6-5, and won the game on Casey Haerther's bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth. Haerther finished the game with six RBI.
Tied at 6-6 in the ninth, Amos Ramon singled to left field leading off. Ramon went to third on Ryan Scoma's sacrifice bunt that resulted in a throwing error by Wingnuts' reliever Lincoln Holdzkom. After Wichita intentionally walked Josh Mazzola, Haerther poked a single through a drawn-in Wingnuts' infield to drive home Ramon with the winning run.
Haerther tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh on a groundout to first with the bases loaded and one out.
Wichita jumped out to an early lead for a third straight game. Jake Kahaulelio walked with one out and took third on John Rodriguez's double down the left field line. C.J. Ziegler followed with another double that drove in Kahaulelio and Rodriguez.
Winnipeg cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first on an RBI double to right-center from Scoma, but Wingnuts' starter Junior Guerra escaped further trouble when Haerther grounded into an inning-ending double play.
In the top of the third, Cole Armstrong walked with two outs. Abel Nieves extended the lead to 4-1 with a line drive home run to right that was just fair and just cleared the fence.
With two outs and no one on base in the fifth, Ziegler homered to deep left-center to make it 5-1 Wichita. The home run was Ziegler's 26th in a Wingnuts' uniform over the last two seasons, tying Ryan Patterson's franchise record.
Winnipeg rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Tyler Graham singled to right with one out and advanced to second when Ramon reached on an infield single. Scoma lined out to left field for the second out. After Mazzola walked to load the bases, Haerther hit an opposite field grand slam to right-center to knot the score.
David Amberson put Wichita back in front with a two-out, solo blast to left in the top of the sixth. It was the first home run of Amberson's professional career.
Guerra took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on seven hits in six innings. Guerra walked three and struck out three.
Goldeyes' starter Peter Gehle also took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs on eight hits in five and one-third. Gehle walked two and struck out three.
Holdzkom took the loss. Patrick Keating earned the win in relief for Winnipeg.
Amberson had three hits and has hit safely in 10 games in a row. Daniel Bennett threw one and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief, and struck out the side in order in the bottom of the eighth.
