Coombs Cruises in RailCats Win over Quebec

Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY, Ind. - Morgan Coombs delivered six outstanding innings on the mound and Cristian Guerrero hit a three-run double to lead the RailCats to a 5-1 victor over the Capitales on Monday night. Gary (12-11) snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory, playing in a heavy fog for most of the game.

The RailCats defense, which committed four errors on Sunday, betrayed them again in the third as first baseman Steve Liddle committed a throwing error attempting to turn a double play on Jeff Helps' groundball. Carlos Willoughby, who led off the inning with a single, came in to score on Royce Consigli's sacrifice fly to right.

The unearned run was the only that Coombs (2-0) would allow in six innings, as he threw his second quality start in his last three outings. He scattered six hits, walked one and struck out one in the victory.

Gary loaded the bases with nobody out in the home half of the third inning, as Chase Tucker walked and Adam Klein and Mike Massaro reached on singles. Cristian Guerrero then mashed a double through the fog and off the wall in left to clear the bases and give the RailCats a 3-1 lead.

The 'Cats scored again in the fourth as Zac Mitchell led off with a walk and came home on a fielder's choice grounder by Massaro to make it 4-1.

Drew Martinez started the sixth inning with a double for the RailCats and moved to third on a bunt single by Mitchell. Tucker hit into a double play, but Martinez scored to extend the lead to 5-1.

Quebec starter Jeff Kaplan (0-1) was tagged for five runs on nine hits in six frames.

James Adkins, Marco Gonzalez and Clay Zavada each tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the RailCats to finish the game.

Klein, Martinez and Mitchell each had a pair of hits and Massaro extended his on-base streak to 23 games, as he has reached safely in every game this season.

Game two of the series is Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m. Right-hander Will Krout (1-2, 6.32) will pitch for Gary against Quebec righty Bryan Rembisz (0-1, 7.20). It's Two for Tuesday at U. S. Steel Yard, with buy two get two free tickets and special deals at the concession stands. For more information log on to www.railcatsbaseball.com.
