Hershey Bears News Release
The Hershey Bears Hockey Club added five more points in the recent three-game weekend to open a four-point advantage as leaders of the East Division.
On the Bears' first trip to Binghamton this season on Friday night, Chris Conner scored two goals and Pheonix Copley made 29 saves to help the Bears to a 3-2 victory over the Senators. After Garrett Thompson opened the scoring for the hosts, Casey Wellman answered back when his shot found its way under a falling Scott Greenham 8:43 into the first period. Conner put Hershey ahead later in the frame, scoring off a feed from Chandler Stephenson. The 2-1 lead would carry all the way into the early portion of the third, when Conner scored his second goal in a similar fashion, this time from a Stan Galiev pass. Colin Greening brought the Sens within one with his first of the season at 9:25. But the Bears held on from there, securing their fourth straight road win.
The spotlight was on GIANT Center on Saturday, as the Bears hosted the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Stan Galiev broke a scoreless deadlock early in the second period, but the Penguins would score three unanswered tallies - Carter Rowney (SH), Nick Drazenovic (PP) and Tom Kuhnhackl - to take a two-goal lead into the second intermission. Hershey then summoned everything to mount one of the most exciting comebacks in months. Kris Newbury beat Jeff Zatkoff on a shorthanded breakaway just 17 seconds into the third, cutting the deficit to one. After the Bears narrowly missed on numerous net-front chances, Conner tied the game with just 3:30 left to play, sending a snap shot sailing past Zatkoff. In overtime, Jim O'Brien circled around the net and found a pinching Mike Moore, who blew a one-timer right past Zatkoff to cap off the comeback.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms came to town to round out the East Division three-in-three, and finally found a way to win at GIANT Center. It would require another overtime, however, ensuring the Bears another standings point. Dane Byers (SH), Stan Galiev, Tomas Kundratek and Chris Brown each scored to wipe out four separate one-goal deficits. But in overtime, Kevin Goumas would find room to the left of Copley and deposited the winner at 2:40, helping the Phantoms snap a four-game losing streak against the Bears. Jay Rosehill scored twice, while Jason Akeson and Nick Cousins added goals. Anthony Stolarz made 36 saves in the win, and Copley also finished a heavy workload with 34 stops.
