Hershey Bears News Release

The Hershey Bears Hockey Club picked up three of a possible four points over their two-game weekend, keeping the club locked into second place in the East Division and in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

The weekend began on Friday with a visit from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz got the start for the visitors, and continued his strong play against the Bears by keeping the club off of the scoresheet for the fourth consecutive period with 11 saves. Meanwhile Blair Jones would give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead, beating Philipp Grubauer 5:08 into the game. Hershey broke Stolarz's second shutout bid when Chris Conner lifted a rebound over the sprawled goaltender in the middle period for his sixth goal of the season. Lehigh Valley went back on top just 1:29 later, when Jay Rosehill forced a turnover, walked in front and scored his first of the season. Penalties toward the end of the period would then doom the Phantoms, as they would start the third two men down. The Bears couldn't convert on the five-on-three, but Stan Galiev ripped a feed from Connor Carrick over Stolarz on the one-man advantage for his eighth power play goal of the season at 1:40 to tie the game. Backup goaltender Martin Ouellette would replace an injured Stolarz shortly after the tying goal, and would stop all but Cameron Schilling's backdoor tap-in with 4:02 left on the clock. The goal would end up as the winner. Casey Wellman later knocked down a Taylor Leier pass right into the vacated Phantoms net at 19:13 to seal the victory.

On Saturday, the Bears and Binghamton Senators battled to overtime. Hershey took a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Dustin Gazley and Chris Brown. Binghamton tied the game with second-period tallies from Fredrik Claesson and Cole Schneider. Kris Newbury restored the lead with his 11th goal of the season, a power-play strike late in the middle frame. The Bears would miss out on a four-minute power play in the third, and buoyed by the penalty kill, the Sens tied the game on a power-play blast from Alex Grant. In overtime, Ryan Dzingel would lead an odd-man rush. His shot from the middle slot slid low on the ice and through the pads of Pheonix Copley 2:45 into overtime, sending the Senators to victory. Binghamton snapped a three-game losing skid at GIANT Center with the win.
