Bridgeport Islanders News Release
HERSHEY, Penn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers lost in a shootout to the Hershey Bears Saturday night, falling by a score of 3-2. The shootout took 10 rounds to decide a winner, with Hershey scoring six times and the Sound Tigers five. Joey Diamond and Ryan Strome had goals for the Sound Tigers while Anders Nilsson turned aside 37 of 39 Hershey shots on goal.
Hershey wasted no time getting on the board, scoring the lone goal of the first period just 18 seconds into the contest. The puck rimmed around the boards to the right point, where Tyson Strachan sent a one-timer towards the net. Dane Byers was cutting towards the crease and redirected the shot past Nilsson for his fourth goal of the season.
There was also a pair of fights in the first period, including one between heavyweights Brett Gallant and Joel Rechlicz. Later in the period, Nick Larson dropped the gloves against Brandon Segal.
Neither team scored in the second period, though the Sound Tigers spent nearly the final five minutes of the middle fram on the penalty kill. They escaped the period, which included a pair of two-man advantages for Hershey, unscathed and began the third period on a power play of their own.
Hershey killed that penalty off, however, and scored a goal on their man advantage less than three minutes into the third. Ryan Stoa's second of the season at 2:56 made it a 2-0 game as the Sound Tigers generated offense but were unable to get one past Bears goaltender Philipp Grubauer.
That changed just more than a minute following Stoa's goal as the Sound Tigers, once again on a power play, cut the lead in half. A stretch pass from Johan Sundstrom sprung Diamond on a breakaway, and he put it past Grubauer for the goal.
Play continued through much of the third period with the Bears still leading by a goal, but Strome tied it up with less than three minutes to play in regulation. Sundstrom was awarded another primary assist after feeding the puck to Strome in the right circle. The rookie collected the puck and fired a wrist shot short-side on Grubauer to tie the score at two.
The game went to a scoreless overtime, and the marathon shootout was finally decided in the 10th round. Dane Byers got it past Nilsson while Brett Gallant was unable to get his shot off, giving Hershey the victory. It's the first time the Sound Tigers have lost in a shootout this season; they had won their previous two games that had gone to one.
The Sound Tigers return to action Sunday afternoon with a 3 p.m. game at Webster Bank Arena against the Adirondack Phantoms.
