Devils Unlucky In Loss To Phantoms

ALBANY, NY - The Albany Devils were on the wrong side of two unfortunate bounces that led to a 2-0 Adirondack Phantoms win Saturday at Times Union Center. Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made 23 saves on 25 shots. At the other, end Yann Danis made 28 saves for his team's second straight shutout.
"We just didn't have the jump that we needed tonight," said Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "I thought they did a good job defending and blocking -- just got in the way of a lot of things. When we got through, Danis was there."
Adirondack's first goal came when Rob Bordson's centering pass deflected off a Devil's stick and into the net at 13:07.
"I just attacked him and I knew I had Seth Helgeson backdoor," Wedgewood said. "Joe Whitney was bringing back pressure and [Bordson] threw a prayer pass to make a nice play. Whitney did what he was supposed to, back checked and got the stick on puck. Unfortunately it went the wrong way and ended up in the corner of the net."
Just over four minutes later, Mark Alt's point shot was first redirected by Nick Cousins and again by Ben Holmstrom, pin-balling over the goal line at 17:27. The officiating crew debated a potential high stick, but in the end determined the play was a good goal.
"I had my eye on it from the start," Wedgewood said. "It just was going blocker then it was to my glove. The guy got a stick on it tight and it picked up speed and obviously it went straight down. It found its way between my arm and my pad. I had my eye on it and I felt it was at least worth the review."
Wedgewood made his fourth start in the Devils last six outings.
"In my opinion, he didn't give up a goal tonight," Kowalsky said. "You can't ask for any more from him. You wish you could get him a little more offensive support, so [the goaltenders] don't have to be outstanding every night."
The Phantoms won their sixth straight game and improved to 7-4-0-2.
In the end, Albany, which is now 6-6-0-1, owned a 28-25 shot advantage and went 0-4 on the power play and 6-6 on the penalty kill.
Next up, the Devils host the Sound Tigers for a 2 pm contest Monday at Times Union Center. As part of Veterans' Day, all Veterans will receive free admission at the box office.
