NORFOLK, VA - Nikita Namestnikov scored twice, while Cedric Desjardins turned aside all 19 shots faced to lead the Syracuse Crunch to a 4-0 victory over the Norfolk Admirals Saturday night.
Namestnikov scored the first of two goals on the power play at 5:36 of the opening frame. J.T. Brown slid a pass across the crease, and Namestnikov scooped up the puck and slid it into the net behind Norfolk netminder John Gibson. Namestnikov's goal gave the Crunch a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period, and stretched the AHL's longest point streak to 12 games.
The second period saw the Crunch take control of possession as well as the game, scoring three goals in a 2:23 span. Halfway through the period and just seconds after Norfolk killed off a 5-on-3 Syracuse power play, former Admiral, Jean-Phillipe Cote, slapped a shot from the point that was knocked down by Cedric Paquette. Gibson lost it in the fray as the puck bounced past him for the goal at 10:25.
Less than a minute later, ex-Admiral Dana Tyrell widened the gap to three at the 11:13 mark in the second. Syracuse captain Mike Angelidis provided the assist against his former team.
The final goal of the spurt came in the slot off the stick of Namestnikov for his second goal of the evening. He received a pass in space and put a quick wrister by Gibson as the netminder was being screened to extend the Crunch lead to a 4-0.
A sluggish third period went without a goal from either side and the Admirals were outshot 9-3 in the final stanza. Syracuse goaltender Cedric Desjardins stopped all 19 shots faced in the game to secure the 4-0 shutout victory. . Norfolk is now 7-4-0-3 and remains in fifth in the Eastern Conference. Syracuse leaps into second place in the conference and boasts a 9-3-1-0 record with 19 points.
Norfolk hits the road this week with a matchup Wednesday at Manchester, Saturday at Providence and then return to Manchester on Sunday before coming home.
