St. John's IceCaps News Release
St. John's, NL - With the St. John's IceCaps on the power play in the final minute, Brian O'Neill scored a shorthanded breakaway goal with just 14 seconds to play to steal the 3-2 victory for the Manchester Monarchs Saturday night at Mile One Centre.
Hunter Bishop and Andy Andreoff had the other tallies for the Monarchs, while Martin Jones earned the win by kicking aside 31 of 33 shots.
For the IceCaps, Patrice Cormier and Kael Mouillierat had the goals, while Eric O'Dell pocketed two assists. Eddie Pasquale turned aside 31 shots in a losing effort.
St. John's opened the scoring at 14:54 of the first period, when Cormier notched his first of the season with the IceCaps on the power play. After Jones made a pad save on O'Dell's rocket from the high slot, Cormier scooped up the loose puck and shovelled it past Jones to make it 1-0.
The Monarchs evened the score at a goal apiece just over two minutes later, however, on a tally from Andreoff. Parked in front of the net, Andreoff took a feed from Brandon Kozun before fooling Pasquale to the blocker side.
In the second frame, Manchester jumped ahead to a 2-1 advantage five minutes in when Bishop pounced on the rebound off a Vincent Loverde shot and fired it upstairs past a helpless Pasquale.
The IceCaps didn't waste time in tying things up in the third, as Mouillierat scored the equalizer at 4:10. As St. John's stormed into the Monarchs zone on the rush, O'Dell fired a sharp-angle shot from the corner before Mouillierat jumped on the rebound and made no mistake in beating Jones above the glove.
With St. John's on the man-advantage in the final minute, the Monarchs pulled ahead 3-2 with just 14 seconds left to play. While the IceCaps were applying pressure before the end of regulation, O'Neill stripped the puck in the neutral zone and waltzed in on a partial break on Pasquale, deking him and backhanding the game-winning goal up and in over the blocker.
The IceCaps will look to get back in the win column as they continue their home stand on Wednesday at Mile One Centre, when they take on the Worcester Sharks in the first of a three-game series.
