After a highly successful weekend surrounding the Capital BlueCross AHL Outdoor Classic, the HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club will return to GIANT Center for the final home game before the All-Star Break. The team claimed three out of six points last week, beginning with a shootout victory on the road on Wednesday against the Worcester Sharks. Boyd Kane started the scoring for the BEARS, netting a power-play goal 7:41 into the contest. The Sharks tied it when BEARS goaltender Philipp Grubauer was beaten by his Reading Royals teammate Denny Urban 15 seconds into the second. Shortly afterward, T.J. Syner came out of the penalty box and beat Alex Stalock on a breakaway. The BEARS were 10.7 seconds away from a regulation win when Daniil Tarasov tied the game with the Sharks net empty. After an overtime featuring 1:39 of three-on-three play, the teams headed to the shootout. The BEARS received goals from Garrett Mitchell and Ryan Potulny to one-up the Sharks' tally by Urban and skated to a 3-2 win. On Friday at GIANT Center, Kane again gave the BEARS the early lead with a power-play goal, but the Lake Erie Monsters scored once in each period en route to a 3-2 victory. In the Capital BlueCross AHL Outdoor Classic on Sunday, the BEARS' All-Star representative Tomas Kundratek - currently on recall to Washington - scored late in the second period past Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff to give HERSHEY the lead. Paul Thompson set up Riley Holzapfel for a third-period tying goal, then scored on a breakaway in overtime to defeat the BEARS at HERSHEPARK Stadium.
The BEARS will host the St. John's IceCaps on Friday, and then travel to Binghamton to battle the Senators on Saturday.
BEARS NEWS AND NOTES
A CLASSIC SUCCESS: 17,311 fans packed HERSHEYPARK Stadium on Sunday in the first-ever outdoor game hosted in Chocolatetown. The BEARS suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
TAFFE STILL TOPS: C Jeff Taffe, who played in the original NHL Winter Classic in Buffalo, NY in 2008, registered his team-leading 28th assist in the Capital BlueCross AHL Outdoor Classic on Sunday. Taffe ranks tied for second in the league in assists, and his point total ranks tied for sixth.
KUNDRATEK GETS THE CALL: D Tomas Kundratek was recalled by the Washington Capitals on Monday. He netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season in the Capital BlueCross AHL Outdoor Classic on Sunday, to set a new AHL career high in goals. His 26 points are also an AHL career best.
STOPPED BY SABOURIN: Goaltender Dany Sabourin has allowed two goals or less in four of his last five starts. He has a record of 2-2-0 in those games.
TOUGH TANDEM TO TOUCH: Dany Sabourin and Philipp Grubauer, along with the recalled Braden Holtby, have all combined to push the BEARS into a tie for second in the AHL in goals against per game (2.41).
GRUBAUER SHINES: Goaltender Philipp Grubauer is off to Colorado for the 2013 ECHL All-Star Game. The native of Rosenheim, Germany is 2-2-0 with HERSHEY, with a goals-against average of 2.05 and save percentage of .926. In 26 games with the Reading Royals, Grubauer was 19-5-1 at the time of his recall, and his 19 wins still lead the ECHL.
TWO JOIN HERSHEY: With Tomas Kundratek on recall to Washington and with Philipp Grubauer heading to the ECHL All-Star Game, the Capitals reassigned goaltender Brandon Anderson and defenseman Brett Flemming to HERSHEY from the Reading Royals.
