Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins announced today that left wing Jay Henderson and defenseman Brent Thompson will be the team's co-captains for the 2004-05 season. Henderson, a three-time Calder Cup champion (including with Providence in 1999), will wear the "C" for home games. Henderson is returning to the organization with which he began his career in 1997-98. He ranks sixth in franchise history with 206 games played, and third with 656 PIM. He also has 44-57-101 career point totals with the Bruins. Thompson, who ranks ninth in AHL history with 1,828 PIM in 556 games, will serve as the captain for road contests. The 2004-05 season will be the 14th professional year for Thompson, his first as a Bruin.

The Bruins also announced that center Brad Boyes and left wing Andy Hilbert will be the team's alternate captains. Boyes enters his third professional season, and is coming off a stellar year in which he was named an AHL Second-Team All-Star. He finished sixth in league scoring after posting 31-41-72 totals in 78 games with Providence and the Cleveland Barons. Hilbert, now in his fourth professional season, ranks sixth in franchise history with 64 goals, and is tied for 11th with 131 points in 155 games.

"We wanted to have a good mix of experience and youth in our leadership with the team," said head coach Scott Gordon. "The players we selected reflect that balance. They are all quality people with leadership skills, they are good teammates, and they are committed to winning."

The Bruins open up the 2004-05 season tonight at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Springfield Falcons at the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence. The game marks the start of the Bruins' 13th American Hockey League season, making the team fourth in seniority among active franchises in the 28-team league. The game will be the 105th all-time between the Bruins and Falcons. Providence holds a 56-43-5 advantage in the all-time series, and was 7-2-1-0 in last year's season series.

Friday's game is being sponsored by True Value, which will be presenting "Fire Safety Night" in conjunction with the Rhode Island Fire Marshal's Office. There will be fire safety demonstrations, information tables with Providence Fire Fighters throughout the main lobby and concourse and a fire truck in front of the arena. In addition, a special fire safety-related contest will be held.

The Bruins and Falcons will play again at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Providence Bruins magnet schedule, courtesy of Shaw's Supermarkets.
