LOUISVILLE, KY- The matchup between the Murcielagos de Louisville (40-55) and Veleros de Columbus (54-41) was called due to rain in the top of the sixth inning on Copa Night at Louisville Slugger Field.
The Veleros struck first in the top of the first inning. After being hit by a pitch and stealing second base, Richie Palacios was driven home for the first run of the ball game when Will Brennan lined a base hit to center field.
Reds' rehabber Aristides Aquino nearly notched another home run in the second inning but came up inches short when he drove a liner off the top of the wall that bounced back into the field of play for a double.
Columbus tacked on three more in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. After an RBI-single from Richie Palacios, a double steal put runners on second and third for Bo Naylor who roped a single into right field, scoring Tyler Freeman and Richie Palacios.
The Veleros kept the scoring going in the fourth inning, scratching two more across to push the lead to 6-0. Columbus infielder Mitchell Tolman started the inning by taking a hit by pitch and was brought home when center fielder Will Benson laced a triple over the head of his counterpart Jake Fraley in center field. He scored in the following at-bat, thanks to an RBI-single from Tyler Freeman.
Following the scoring, Louisville reliever Pedro Payano entered the game and ended the threat, facing the minimum to end the inning. Justin Nicolino entered the game in the fifth and also worked a scoreless inning, sitting down the side in order.
Due to heavy rain in the top of the sixth, the game was delayed and ultimately called as an official result.
Game four of the six game set between the Bats and the Clippers is scheduled for Friday night (July 29) with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Randy Wynne (4-9, 4.65) will get the ball for Louisville while righty Hunter Gaddis (0-0, 0.00) gets the nod for Columbus.
