LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Peyton Burdick blasted a solo home run and Edward Cabrera fanned seven in five scoreless frames as the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp shut out the Gwinnett Stripers 5-0 Thursday night at Coolray Field.
The Jumbo Shrimp (52-43) took the early lead in the top of the first against Gwinnett (46-50) starter Jared Shuster (L, 0-1). Bryson Brigman led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Two batters later, he scored on a sac fly from Jerar Encarnacion to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville added to their lead in the second inning. With one out, Brian Miller singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Lavarnway and Erik González walked to load the bases when Bubba Hollins reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Miller to score from third.
The Jumbo Shrimp added to their lead in the third. Burdick (13) led off the inning with a solo home run, giving Jacksonville a 3-0 lead.
Cabrera (W, 2-2) dazzled for Jacksonville in his rehab start. On just 61 pitches, he struck out seven, yielding one hit in five scoreless innings. Aneurys Zabala and Robert Garcia finished off Gwinnett with a combined four scoreless innings, while walking three and striking out five.
Following three scoreless frames, the Jumbo Shrimp got back in the run column in the seventh and eighth. Hollins and Brigman smacked back-to-back singles to start the seventh. Hollins advanced to third on a flyout from Burdick and then scored on Encarnacion's second sac fly of the game, giving Jacksonville a 4-0 advantage.
The eighth inning saw the final run for Jacksonville cross the plate. With one out, Miller singled and stole second. In the following at-bat, Lavarnway cranked a long single, scoring Miller to give the Jumbo Shrimp a five-run lead.
