ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Despite the offense out-hitting the Mud Hens 9-3, the Indians were shut out to halt a three-game winning streak on Wednesday night, 3-0. After a scoreless first inning, the Mud Hens got to Indians right-hander Cody Bolton for two runs in the second. Brendon Davis drew a one-out walk and scored what would be the winning run on a fielder's choice and throwing error, and Derek Hill added to the Mud Hen's tally with an RBI double. Hill provided insurance in the seventh with a run-producing single to wrap up the scoring. The Indians bullpen, led by right-hander Noe Toribio and left-hander Eric Stout combining for 4.1 perfect innings, allowed just one hit and one run over their six innings of work. Rodolfo Castro, Tucupita Marcano and Bligh Madris each deposited multi-hit games in the loss.
YOU GO, WE GO: Tucupita Marcano went 2-for-4 in last night's loss - which is his third multi-hit game in 10 games since being optioned to Indy on July 5. He has shined as Indy's leadoff hitter, reaching base safely in all 10 games and has reached in 20 times (13 hits, 7 walks) in 47 plate appearances, good for a .426 on-base percentage.
NOE STOPPING HIM: Noe Toribio tossed 3.0 perfect relief innings on Wednesday night with three strikeouts. In his last four appearances, he is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA (2er/12.0ip) and a 0.58 WHIP. After not striking out a batter while walking seven in his first 5.0 innings over his first four appearances with Indy, he has 11 strikeouts with only two free passes in his last 12.0 innings. Toribio threw 1.2 innings or less in each of his first four appearances and has thrown 2.0 or more innings since then and solidified himself in a middle reliever role. His splits from his first four outings compared to his last four are listed below:
First four: 9.00 ERA (5er/5.0ip), 5 H, 7 BB, O K, 2.40 WHIP, .313 AVG
Last four: 1.50 ERA (2er/12.0ip), 5 H, 2 BB, 11 K, 0.58 WHIP, .128 AVG
LOCKDOWN LEFTIES: The lefty dominance continued last night with Eric Stout adding 1.1 perfect innings with two strikeouts. Since 6/22, Cam Vieaux, Cam Alldred, Stout and Joe Jacques are a combined 4-1 with a 1.49 ERA. Add in Zach Matson, who has made five starts in his last nine appearances, and the collective ERA since 6/22 drops to 1.52 (8er/47.1ip) with a 1.08 WHIP, including Matson's starts. In comparison, 12 right-handed relievers (no starts included) are 3-5 with a 6.39 ERA (54er/76.0ip) in that time span. Vieaux improved to 4-0 on the season Tuesday night with a scoreless sixth inning. Since April 26, the southpaw is 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA (5er/28.0ip), 0.68 WHIP and .120 average against (11-for-92) to lead a group of left-handers who have been dominant for the Indians as of late.
THAT'S 100: With the Indians holding on to a one-run lead, Mason Martin snapped Toledo's momentum with a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to extend the lead back to two runs. The longball marked the 100th of his professional career since being selected by Pittsburgh in the 17th round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft. In that time, his centennial dinger leads all Pirates farmhands. The slugger has launched 15 home runs this season and three this month. He has double-digit home runs in each of his five professional seasons, with a career-high 35 dingers in 2019 with Single-A Greensboro (23) and High-A Bradenton (12).
TONIGHT: The Indians will look to recapture the series lead against the Mud Hens today at 7:05 PM ET at Fifth Third Field. The two squads are meeting for the second time this season and the first time at Toledo. After entering this season trailing the all-time series record at Toledo, 115-112, the Indians could leave Fifth Third Field with a lead this week. The teams first met this season at Victory Field on May 17-22, and the Indians took the series victory with wins in four of the six contests. Tonight, Jerad Eickhoff will take the mound for Indianapolis for his second outing this season and third of his career against the Mud Hen. In one relief appearance this season against Toledo, Eickhoff tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and allowed one hit with five strikeouts on May 19. Countering for Toledo is Cody Sedlock, who will make his second start since being traded to Detroit from Baltimore. Sedlock has never faced Indianapolis.
GET OUT OF MY SWAMP: Right-hander Jerad Eickhoff will look to continue his success against the Mud Hens as he toes the rubber tonight at Fifth Third Field. In two career appearances (one start) against Toledo, Eickhoff owns a 1.10 ERA (1er/8.2ip) with 12 strikeouts and only one walk. His first appearance against Toledo came on 8/4/15 when he tossed 6.0 one-run innings and fanned seven batters for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. In the month of July, he is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA (5er/15.0ip), one walk and 12 strikeouts.
THIS DATE IN 2000: For the second time in two weeks, a Indians pitcher went the distance for a complete game. Rafael Roque surrendered seven hits, one walk and struck out five batters in a full 9.0 innings for a 2-0 win at Syracuse. It was his only complete-game in a Indians uniform and was the fifth out of seven on the season for Indianapolis.
