The Story:
After falling in an early hole on Friday night, the Winterhawks came into Saturday's tilt with a renewed focus on the opening frame, and it paid off. Cross Hanas struck less than a minute into the contest to get Portland on the board first, followed soon after by goals from Tyson Kozak and Jack O'Brien to put the Hawks up 3-0 within the opening 10 minutes.
But as we've seen already between these two teams in 2021, 3-0 is far from an insurmountable lead as both sides have experience erasing those deficits against one another. Ethan Ernst found twine before the end of the first, Samuel Huo added fuel to the fire with another Tri-City tally early in the second and the Americans' comeback was on. After Connor Bouchard scored to tie things up at 12:51, Ernst and Huo each lit the lamp again just 29 seconds apart to make it a 5-3 game.
The Winterhawks continued to fight, though, and their comeback prowess shone as Luca Cagnoni responded with his first WHL goal just 35 seconds after Huo's tally to get Portland back into it. Jaydon Dureau completed the second comeback of the game with a shorthanded beauty early in the third as he deftly deked netminder Cole Tisdale at full speed. With the game tied, Portland went on the attack, but Tri-City was not to be denied as Petr Moravec bagged the deciding tally at 5:24 to give the Americans a lead they would not relinquish.
The Hawks now head back to the Rose City with hopes that home cooking will cure what ails them. Having lost three straight, Portland looks ahead to 11 consecutive games at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, starting on Tuesday against Everett.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"(Coming home is) something I'm looking forward to. Being at home, being in front of Hawks fans. I hope they're ready because we are."
Winterhawks defenseman Ryder Thompson
