Tigers Drop Home and Home Opener
November 14, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
The Tigers welcomed the Calgary Hitmen to Co-op Place on Saturday night in the first game of a home and home weekend series. It's the first of eight meeting between the two clubs this season.
Calgary jumped out to the early lead only 3:31 into the first period. Jackson van de Leest scored his first of the season off a wrister from the slot that just snuck under the arm of the Tigers netminder. The Hitmen would add to their lead just over six minutes later. Tristan Zandee found the back of the net with a low wrist shot that went five hole. The Tigers would claw back another goal before the end of the opening frame though. Owen MacNeil toe dragged the puck around the defender and got a shot off that went of the Hitmen goalie's toe. Ashton Ferster was Johnny-on-the-spot and put home the rebound for his third of the year. Daniel Baker picked up the secondary assist on the marker.
The Tigers evened things up midway through the second period on the power play. Oasiz Wiesblatt tipped in Tyler MacKenzie's shot from the left circle for his second of the season. Daniel Baker picked his second assist of the game on the power play marker.
Zac Funk capitalized on a mishap in the Tigers zone and put the Hitmen up 3-2 early in the third. The go ahead goal was his fourth of the season. The Hitmen would add another late in the third to give them a bit more breathing room. Sean Tschigerl netted his sixth of the season unassisted while shorthanded. The insurance marker would prove not to be needed though as the Hitmen held on for the 4-2 victory.
Garin Bjorklund (2-6-1-0) got the start between the pipes for the Tigers. He was solid in net stopping 24 of the 28 shots he faced.
