Portland Winterhawks News Release

Kent, Wash. - Three-point nights from Kyle Chyzowski (2G, 1A) and Luke Schelter (1G, 2A) spearheaded a lethal Portland offense as the Hawks cruised past Seattle 6-1 in Kent on Saturday.

Seattle kicked off the night with a banner raising, bringing a sellout crowd to its feet from the start. But it didn't take long for Diego Buttazzoni and the Hawks to silence accesso ShoWare Center with the opening goal midway through the first. Luca Cagnoni's initial shot ricocheted off the boards and through bodies to the stick of Buttazzoni, who promptly put it into the top corner. Three minutes later, it was Chyzowski's turn to light the lamp with a deft deflection of a Ryder Thompson shot-pass from the left circle to make it 2-0 Hawks after 20 minutes.

Cruising into the second period, Portland kept its foot on the gas on Marcus Nguyen's third of the year. The Calgary, Alta. native has been in fine form to start the season, shown again with a tidy top-shelf tuck on a one-timer from James Stefan and Josh Davies. The T-Birds grabbed a shorthanded goal from Sam Popowich soon after, but the Hawks were ready to snuff out any comeback bid.

Chyzowski grabbed his second of the night 91 seconds later - another deflection, this time from a Schelter shot - followed by Gabe Klassen finishing off a pretty passing play with Stefan and Josh Zakreski and Schelter netting his own goal on a seeing-eye shot from the bottom of the right circle. The Winterhawks have now recorded a period with at least four goals in all three games to start the season.

Some penalty trouble threatened Portland's advantage in the third period, but Jan Špunar (17/18 saves) and the team's stout penalty kill held strong for the victory. Scott Ratzlaff and Spencer Michnik combined for 24 saves on 30 shots in Seattle's loss.

The Hawks are back in action for their own home opener next Friday against the Everett Silvertips at 7:00 P.M., then again on Saturday against the Vancouver Giants.
