Wheat Kings Bounce Back, Double Up Broncos

September 30, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Whatever offensive speed bump the Brandon Wheat Kings hit against the Moose Jaw Warriors, they quickly put it behind them. On home ice the very next night, their offense again roared to life against the Swift Current Broncos.

Six different Wheat Kings scored and Carson Bjarnason was stellar with 34 saves as the Wheat Kings took a 6-3 win. Joey Rocha stopped 23 of 28 shots he faced, while Matthew Ward and Caleb Wyrostok scored for the Broncos.

"I think we stuck with it," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "The first period for the first twelve minutes wasn't our best, we were kind of on our heels a little bit. Credit to Swift, they skated, they came at us hard. We got up to the pace of the game and I thought we played pretty well after that."

The Wheat Kings opened the scoring early, as less than a minute in Kayden Sadhra-Kang ripped a perfect shot from the blue line bar down for the 1-0 lead. Though the Broncos pressed hard, piling up shots, it was the Wheat Kings who struck next, early on their first power play, as Dominik Petr one-timed home a pass from Andrei Maliavin.

Offense continued to flow for the Wheat Kings in the second, as Luke Shipley slid the puck across the offensive zone to Caleb Hadland, who sent it back the other way for a tap-in for Jayden Wiens. But that was when the Broncos began to really push back, as Ward sniped one off the rush to give them life.

Early in the third, in the dying seconds of a power play, the Broncos struck again, with Ward using a one-timer of his own. Quickly snuffing the momentum, Charlie Elick rushed up ice, gained the line with speed, and ripped a shot past Rocha from the right circle.

"I saw a lane there when I got the puck and jumped in, got a good shot on net and it happened to go in," Elick said. "I've got to keep working and things like that will happen."

The Broncos struck back with Wyrostok corralling a loose and bouncing puck in the slot to pull them back within one. But Brett Hyland had the answer for Brandon, with Carter Klippenstein feeding him in the slot for a hugely important goal.

A late power play gave the Broncos a chance to claw back, but they couldn't solve Bjarnason. Rylen Roersma found the empty net late to seal the deal.

The two teams quickly renew acquaintances when the Broncos return to Brandon on Wednesday, October 4. Pick up your tickets for that game HERE.
